Hiking Equipment: A Lot To Choose From

All of the things that you need to take with you on your outdoor activities will make up your hiking equipment list which however may not include equipment for traveling such as passports and travel documents, and which will also depend on the type of hiking you plan on doing. Thus, you will need to select different items of hiking equipment if you are planning on taking a trip during the day and another set if you are planning on a night excursion and which equipment you choose to take will also depends on the facilities you expect you will find on the trip and it will also depends on whether you are planning to cross rivers and the climatic conditions you expect to encounter.

Choose According to Weight and Bulk

If you are planning on a day trip you would require rudimentary items that could also be used at night and in emergencies, and you should also let others know where you are planning on going, while you may even need to choose the hiking equipment according to its weight as well as bulk which should be within your capabilities to carry them. Other than that, you need to take into account any other alternative uses of items and you need to weigh these alternatives with the importance of each item of hiking equipment.

Nevertheless, the basic hiking equipment that every hiker will need to take along include the backpack, pocket knife, electric torch, maps and compasses, first aid kits and matches as well as tinder and also candles, water flask, water purification and food, sleeping bags and clothes. Other than these, there are many more hiking equipment that you can choose and which will depend on their usefulness and your preferences, and in addition, you may also need to take along certain essential items that can be carried separately from your backpack which would come in handy should an emergency take place.

These essential hiking equipment items that can be carried separately in a pouch include maps, compasses, sunglasses and sunscreen, additional food as well as water, extra clothes, headlamps or flashlight, first aid kits, fire starter and matches as well as a knife. Besides, these ten essential items of hiking equipment you may also consider taking water treatment devices, ice-axe for winter travel, repair kit, insect repellant, signaling devices and also plastic tarp as well as rope when out in the field.

However, these essential hiking equipment items may not be necessary on all types of outdoor activities; though, having them will ensure your survival under extreme conditions. In the end, you are the best person to decide what you want to take along and what can be omitted.

Myths About Hiking Colorado

Now that you have decided to go hiking in Colorado there are a few myths that need to be cleared up before you go. Over the years hiking Colorado has caused people to create legends and stories about some of the things they have seen and much of this is no cause for alarm at all. As a matter of fact, most of them are just plain silly. So let's dispel some of the hiking Colorado myths.

Pete Coors Pete Coors is the president of the Coors Brewing Company and he is famous for his many commercials shot in the mountains of Colorado with snow and beautiful lakes in the background. Over the years a myth about hiking Colorado has developed around Pete Coors and that myth needs to be debunked right now. Pete Coors does not hand you a free can of Coors beer while you are hiking Colorado. It doesn't happen so don't go looking for it.

Bigfoot You cannot talk about hiking Colorado without talking about Bigfoot. Bigfoot is the big and hairy mythical creature that is said to inhabit the wilderness of Colorado around the Rocky Mountains. It is often said that there could be a whole colony of Bigfoot type creatures living in the Rocky Mountains and that they are said to have a horrible odor and have even been known to attack hikers that get too aggressive at pursuing the Bigfoot creatures. Contrary to popular belief, and to set the facts straight about another myth, Bigfoot does not follow you around all day if you give him your spare change. Fear of this myth seems to be a big reason why some people avoid Colorado and it is just not true. Bigfoot also does not take credit cards.

Colorado Rockies The Colorado Rockies are the professional baseball team in Colorado and the myth that in order to legally go hiking in Colorado you must first play at least one inning for the Rockies is completely false. It is true that they will take just about anyone to play for the Rockies but it is not a requirement to play for them.

So those are just some of the myths about Colorado that needed to be put on the table and discounted immediately as false and damaging to the tourism industry in Colorado. Remember that Colorado is full of some of the most beautiful scenery in the world so take the time to make your way out there this year on vacation and don't worry about the myths and legends as most of them are just not true at all.

Different Conditions Call For Different Hiking Boots

When going on a hike, the footwear being worn will have an impact on the comfort and safety of the trip. There are numerous options available for hiking boots, from those used in short walks on level ground to those for extended wear on challenging terrain. The surface of the trail or ground will also help decide the best type of hiking boots that will be best suited to the journey. Flat soles or deep tread can be comfortable on the right trail and being equipped to handle what the trail has to offer can improve safety.

One of the qualities to look for in hiking boots is the size. If a boot or shoe is too big the foot will tend to slip around inside causing blisters. It can also result in the socks binding up in one spot under the foot and that will become real uncomfortable real fast. If the hiking boots are too tight they will be uncomfortable as well and could result in developing foot cramps as the day goes on.

If walking in hiking boots pain develops on the top of the foot due to ill-fitting footwear, some of the laces can be loosened to ease the uncomfortable feeling. For example, if the shoe feels too tight on the top of the ankle, relace the boots skipping the eyes near the section of the boot. This will keep the rest of the boot secured to the foot while easing pressure on that one spot.

Possible Terrain Make Boot Choice Necessary

If the planned trip involves more flat trails, hiking boots with a smother surface can make it more comfortable. While deep treads are great for walking on loose or rocky ground they can quickly become uncomfortable on flat trails. For walking in unfamiliar territory, however it may be best to plan for the worst hiking conditions. It is always better to wear hiking boots for rough terrain and end up on smooth ground that wear boots for smooth ground and slip off the trail in rough terrain.

Some other properties of hiking boots to consider are the strength of the bottom of the sole. They should be sturdy enough to not feel any stones being walked on as well as prevent penetration from sharp objects. A metal arch support is best in rough, rocky terrain while a light weight plastic support is fine for flat, smooth ground.

Ill Fitting Hiking Backpacks Can Be A Pain

There are two considerations when buying hiking backpacks, including size and comfort. The size will be decided by the length of any trips you plan to take and the comfort is determined by having the pack fitted to your body. While most hiking backpacks are generally the same size, the shoulder straps as well as the shoulder harness can be adjusted to insure a more comfortable fit.

For hiking trips of many days, hiking backpacks should also have external pockets for things that will be needed throughout the journey. No one is going to want to stop and remove the pack from their back to get to their water bottle. Stopping to eat will usually allow enough time to give your back some rest, but during short stops, there should be access to many useful items. Small snacks should also be available through external pouches so even if you do not have to dig through hiking backpacks to grab a trail bar.

Adjusting the harness is usually a simple matter of adjusting the straps. In some cases a second person may be needed to make sure you achieve the proper fit. To adjust the shoulder harness may be a little more difficult. Typically, they are sewn into the straps and are made of metal or plastic and they can be bent to adjust the pack to your specific height.

Positioning Load Also Makes Pack Lighter

Ideally, the top of the loaded pack should be above the shoulders, with a lot of the pack's weight resting on your shoulders by the shoulder harness. The straps are to keep the pack from sliding to the side while hiking, not to hold the back tightly to your back. Quality hiking backpacks will also have a lumbar pad to keep the pack's frame or hard items packed inside from digging into your back.

If the load is going to be fairly heavy, hiking backpacks can use an abdomen strap that holds the pack snug against the lower back, which also helps stop the pack from sliding to either side while walking or while traversing hills and uneven trails. The straps on hiking backpacks should be snug enough to provide comfort but not so tight as to restrict circulation.

The use of hiking backpacks can also be made more comfortable by proper packing methods. Hard objects against the body will quickly become uncomfortable and spare clothing and other soft items should be used as padding between those types of items and the body inside the pack.

The Right Hiking Backpack Can Indeed be Found!

You love to hike, but lately you have noticed that the pockets of your clothing can only hold so much, and it certainly does not make for a very comfortable hiking experience. So, what you need to do is get a hiking backpack that feels good and holds everything that you need it to hold!

So Many Choices

You might be daunted when it comes to shopping for a hiking backpack, because there are indeed many different styles available on the market. Perhaps you want a hiking backpack that does not necessarily look fashionable, but it very practical. Or, perhaps you want a backpack that has both fashion and functionality. Whatever the preference, there are some basic things that all hiking backpacks should have.

First of all, the hiking backpack that you choose should have straps that are easily adjustable. No one body is the same, and as such you will need to adjust the straps accordingly. The straps should not be narrow, but rather wide, and made of a padded material so that your shoulders do not become aggravated.

The next thing that your hiking backpack should have is plenty of pockets. From cell phones to water bottles, you will need places to keep each things separately and safely. There are some backpacks that have a significant amount of pockets – these backpacks will cost more money, especially if the pockets are hidden, so make sure you choose wisely.

It goes without saying that your hiking backpack should be weather resistant. The backpack should be able to withstand blaring heat and a cold rain. Thus, look for backpacks that have a nylon base. If you have had nylon products before, then you will notice that it does an excellent job at repelling water.

A hiking backpack, should, above all things, be comfortable to wear. A backpack might look nice and have all of the space that you need, but it might become cumbersome to carry, especially if you have many things that you prefer to carry and are a serious hiker.

If you want more information on hiking backpacks, all you need to do is go to your local sports supply store, since there should be a variety of hiking backpacks available in the camping section. You can also search the internet, since there are many reputable websites that can be of help. You are sure to find the best hiking backpack for you with the proper research.

Hiking Continues To Grow As Popular Activity

For whatever reason, many people enjoy getting into the outdoors to enjoy hiking on trails or blazing their own trails through the wilderness. Whether walking along nature trails at the local park or hiking through mountainous terrain, millions of people annually set out on walks that vary in length from a few hours to a few days. Being the outdoors also has no limitations on conditions as people enjoy outings in all types of weather.

For many it is a matter of having time alone without constant interruptions of telephones and emails and for some it is a way of communing with nature. Getting back to the basics of finding solitude alone or with a small group of close friends, hiking can bring people together while remaining lost in their individual thoughts. It is also a great way to view nature in its natural habitat and witness some of the wonder of wildlife.

Being prepared is not only the Boy Scout motto as regardless of the type of hiking a person enjoys, being ready to face any obstacle that nature uses to attempt to lock their trail is an important part of the hobby. Whether hiking for enjoyment, education or health a walk in the woods can present some opportunities for danger and injury and knowing how to react to the circumstances can keep hikers safe.

Know Limits Before Hitting The Trail

With many people rarely hitting the hiking trails they can put their health in jeopardy if they are not physically able to meet the challenges. Those who participate in exercise programs to build muscles and stamina will have a more enjoyable experience than those who push away from their desk with a sudden urge to hiking on a rough trail.

When a decision is made to take up hiking, before heading to the store to buy all the clothing and equipment, take a trip to doctor for a health assessment to determine the body can handles the rigors of the contemplated trails. Simply hiking around trails in the local park is more like taking a nature walk and probably will not present any problems. However, if the decision is made to head up a steep mountain trail, the toll taken on underused muscles can result in fatigue along with strains and muscle pulls.

If the potential for hiking looms in the future, it will pay dividends to work out the muscles required for heavy walking as well as making sure the heart is healthy enough to stand the strain.

Take an Affordable Hike with Discount Hiking Boots

Hiking is a great outdoor sporting activity and just like any sport requires a few essential items such as hiking boots. However, many of these boots come with an expensive price tag which might convince you to hit the trails in your regular sneakers or some other inappropriate foot attire. Instead of risking injury, look into purchasing a pair of discount hiking boots which will have all the hiking essentials you need but without the huge price tag.

Where to Buy

Discount hiking boots are not as difficult to find as you might think when you consider that there are quite a few boot manufacturers. You can find good quality boots at end of the season close-outs, warehouse stores and even the internet without spending an entire paycheck on them. The key is to be diligent about canvassing the newspapers and internet for sales as well as store closings.

Manufacturers may have over-runs of particular models of boots which they then sell at a steep discount to factory outlet stores. You can find discount hiking boots in this manner as well as find discount stores which sell top name brands at discount prices simply because of some small defect that likely will not affect the performance of the boot!

Overstocks and discontinued models are likely the best way to find your discount hiking boots as long as you don't mind not having the season's latest and greatest. Manufacturers have to follow the latest trends and fashions so that might mean discontinuing a boot simply because it is a color that no one particularly likes. This could be your gain and besides, once you go hiking in your discount hiking boots a few times, you will likely not be able to tell what color they are any more!

Don't Sacrifice Quality

Discount does not necessarily mean inferior quality so do not trust your feet to a pair of boots that are too cheap. This indicates that the structural integrity would not withstand more than a few hikes. Your discount hiking boots should be able to withstand the rigors of the particular hikes you enjoy whether it is light trails or tougher inclines and hill sides.

Inspect the discount hiking boots that you are interested in and see how the bottom of the boots is constructed as well as the stitching. The less stitching a boot has the higher the quality because you don't have to contend with a stitched seam rubbing you in the wrong place. The bottom of the boot should be able to withstand hiking over the terrain of your choice without fear of it peeling away from your shoe.

Discount hiking boots may be constructed solidly but use materials that are less expensive than the top dollar name brands. You will have to decide whether you can deal with a waterproof fabric material over a top grain leather one. The bottom line is that you do have choices when it comes to discount hiking boots but you have to be diligent in identifying them.

How To Look For Discount Backpacking Supplies

Everyone likes to save money and when you look for bargains and discounts there are things you should always get on discount and things that you may not want to skimp on. Discount backpacking supplies is a great example of both sides of this equation. When you are searching for discount backpacking supplies there are some things that you should probably not buy on a discount unless you are familiar with a product and you know it is just a great deal. Other things you should always get at a discount and save yourself money and hassle by getting discount backpacking supplies instead of shelling out top dollar when you don't need to.

Sometimes you can get great deals on quality discount backpacking supplies just because of the season of the year. For some reason many surplus and sporting goods stores will put their hiking boots on sale towards the end of winter and that is when you should get that new pair of boots. For some reason tents are the same way. When winter starts to approach tent prices will drop and that is a great time for you to snap up some great deals on discount backpacking supplies. Even though tents will go on sale standard camping equipment like canteens and compasses will not and that has always been somewhat of a mystery. But canteens and compasses are two things you should not go cheap on so if you have to pay top dollar for them then do so.

What Not To Save On

Probably the single most important thing a hiker will carry is his or her backpack. A backpack carries everything you will need to survive on your hike so maybe you should not include a backpack in your list of discount backpacking supplies. A tear here or a rip there and suddenly your food is gone or some other terrible thing could happen. So the one piece of hiking equipment you should probably make sure is top quality is your backpack. If you find a great deal on a quality backpack then that is great but otherwise get ready to make the investment.

From experience I can tell you that getting a discount pair of hiking boots is about the worst idea you can ever have. There is a reason why the good boots cost so much and you really do not appreciate that until you have been hiking for about an hour and then you can just feel the blisters forming on your feet and your ankles are just killing you. So be sure to invest in a very good pair of hiking boots no matter how attractive the cheap pairs may seem to be. You get what you pay for and when it comes to your feet you don't want to learn any lessons the hard way.
